With a title centered on a deadly assassin, one would expect non-stop violence, and if there’s one thing this current Deathstroke series has not skimped on, it’s blood, severed limbs, unwarranted decapitation, and plenty of gratuitous violence. But, beyond the death and destruction, Deathstroke delivers an interesting story as well. Not only are we given the story revolving around the bad guy, we are thrown into a world we are introduced to those that helps him do what he does. Not that he needs help to get the job done, but there are those that make him the man he is, which, simply speaking, a killer, nothing more - nothing less.
So, in this issue we get some more death, some severed limbs, dismember heads, another introduction to a member of Deathstroke’s supporting cast, some more talk about the mysterious briefcase, and given the introduction of Legacy, a new foe for Deathstroke, and quite possibly an interesting match-up to look forward to in the near future. And, all of this is good since there seems to be more going on in this series as Deathstroke gets closer to uncovering the truth about that mysterious briefcase he retrieved in issue #1, and everything leaves the reader with a strong since of some serious repercussions from the events of the last few issues that are coming his way. And, they won't necessarily be pleasant.
So, who says every comic should have superheroes versus super-villains? Why not read one with a deadly assassin? I have to admit I am enjoying the depth Kyle Higgins continues to add to this killer as well as how the story is moving at a pace that has not made me feel lost nor wanting (and the insane violence is an added bonus).
Deathstoke’s voice, this view of the way he perceives the world to work is also an added bonus and does not draw the reader away from the story itself. And, I have to admit that I am curious about what's in the briefcase. Even though it was never revealed in the movie Pulp Fiction what exactly was in that briefcase, I have a sinking feeling that if this mystery is dragged on too long, it could be disappointing. Then again, if written right, the best part about this briefcase could end up being the mere mystery of always wondering what was in it.
Over all, I give this comic a rating of 4 out of 5. It is really good, insanely violent for a mainstream comic, and something I would recommend to others to jump into right now.
