After an extremely long and frantic week of fundraiser’s I’ve decided tonight I’ll take a break from work and FINALLY read some comic books. Besides reading the start of Sam Humpries’ awesome new miniseries Sacrifice I haven’t had a chance to read ANYTHING in my propaganda pile and seriously needed to catch up, so here I go with my marathon reading fest!!
First we’re going to start with Chris Roberson’s newest creation Memorial.
Memorial was conceived by Roberson many years ago before he ventured into the world of comics. It was an idea that he found intriguing, but couldn’t figure out how to balance it out. Years later he brought the amnesiac Em and a cast of interesting characters to life at IDW. Joined by artist Rich Ellis they bring us a book comparable to Sandman or an insane Doctor Who (Or Maybe Grant Morrison writing Doctor Who, which is some crazy bat shit).
Em has a previous life that she can’t remember. One day she just ran into a hospital without a clue who she was and her new life was born. Em, they called her based on the decoration she wore around her neck with the letter “M” engraved on it. As soon as we meet Em we are whisked away to what could potentially be her past life; a place called the Everlands.
Here we meet Hook, The Metal Man and Bellow, the Puppet who are the obvious villains for memorial, but they work for a man who is much worse than either of them. He’s looking for a key and if you disappoint him you best not expect to be around long; he has the power to turn you to stone.
One afternoon Em is on break from work when she notices a green door in a place where she’s never seen a door before. Upon entering she finds herself swallowed by a shop of antiquities, relics and old as dirt stuff. But don’t forget all shops must have a keep and this one’s owner is a definite character. He opens Em up to a whole new world or perhaps it’s the world she forgot?
Roberson and Ellis have created an interesting wonderland that could have endless possibilities. In an interview with ComicBookResources.com Roberson says,” IDW is adopting the same model they did with "Locke and Key," that kind of "Hellboy" model where it is an open-ended series of miniseries. So the first one will tell a complete story in six issues, and then immediately after that we start working on the next one.” So hold on to your knickers, folks!! If Roberson’s work on iZombie and Fables are any inclination it’s going to be a wild ride!!!
